Troubleshoot “Head Collision” for xTool M2

Issue description

When using xTool M2, the "Head Collision" pop-up may appear in xTool Studio (Error Code 5008-WARNING).

This error may occur in the following situations:

  • The laser head encounters a physical obstacle while moving.
  • The laser head does not actually collide with the material, but still triggers an error.

When this error occurs, the device will stop processing immediately, and the laser head will be unable to move. If this issue arises, please refer to this guidance.

Possible causes

Scenario 1: The laser head encounters a physical obstacle while moving.

  • Obstacles in the laser head movement path.
  • Thickness entered manually, actual material is elevated, but the material thickness + elevation height was not filled in.

Scenario 2: The laser head does not actually collide with the material, but still triggers an error.

  • Insufficient grease: The Z-axis backplate slide rail or optical shaft lacks lubrication, causing increased motion resistance and the system to misjudge it as a collision.
  • Abnormal assembly of internal backplate spring: The reset spring inside the Z-axis backplate is improperly assembled, detached, or damaged, affecting normal Z-axis movement and causing false alarms.

Troubleshooting procedures

Scenario 1: The laser head encounters a physical obstacle while moving.

1. Check obstacles in the laser head movement path.

  • Check the processing area
Check whether the material to be processed is flat and securely fastened to the baseplate. If it is curled or warped, use magnets, clamps, or tape to secure it flat.
Check whether the material thickness exceeds the device's processing height range.
Remove all foreign objects from the processing area, such as tools, residual materials, cables, debris, etc.
  • Manually move the laser head
With the device turned off, gently push the laser head by hand to move it along the X and Y axes, and check for any noticeable sticking or foreign objects blocking its path. If any are found, inspect further and remove the obstruction.
For daily cleaning and maintenance, you can refer to: Daily Cleaning and Maintenance of xTool M2
  • After confirming there are no obstructions, restart the device, perform a homing operation once, and check whether the error disappears.

2. Check the material thickness settings and elevation conditions

  • Check the thickness value
If you entered the thickness value manually, make sure it matches the actual material thickness. It is recommended to use the “Auto-measure” feature to obtain an accurate material thickness value, rather than entering it manually.
  • Check for any riser
Check whether magnetic blocks, silicone pads, or other materials are used to raise the material.
If the material is elevated, please include the riser in the total thickness, or remove it and place the material directly on the baseplate.
  • After making the adjustments, run the processing task again and check whether the error disappears.

Scenario 2: The laser head does not actually collide with the material, but still triggers an error.

1. Check the Z-axis backplate

(1) Keep the device powered on and remove the laser head.

(2) Pull the Z-axis Assembly down by a short distance.

(3) Hold the bottom of the Assembly, gently push it upward, and then release it (be careful not to apply too much force).

(4) If the Assembly can naturally fall back down, there is no obvious abnormality in the Assembly structure; otherwise, there is an abnormality in the backplate.

2. Maintain the Z-axis backplate

(1) Turn off the power, unplug the connection cable, and remove the laser. Move the Z-axis Assembly to the bottom-right corner.

(2) Find the grease in the xTool M2 tool kit.

(3) Apply grease to the positions marked with red dots.

(4) After applying, manually slide the backplate up and down. Make sure the grease is evenly applied to the entire thicker optical shaft.

(5) After completing the lubrication, re-perform the Z-axis calibration and check whether the error has disappeared.

If the issue persists, it may be due to the abnormal assembly of the internal backplate spring. This issue cannot be resolved by the user and requires contacting xTool Customer Service.
